Girona is situated in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula and covers an area of 6,000 square kilometres. It forms part of Spain's autonomous community of Catalonia and is bordered by the provinces of Barcelona and Lleida, as well as by France. Thanks to the region's privileged geographical situation, between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean sea, Girona is a long¬established cultural crossroads which also possesses highly active trade and tourist industries. Many of Spain's first campsites were established in Girona, which pioneered the development of the nation's camping/caravanning industry.
